The belief of an almighty being has always existed amongst the Eʋe people in the form of Mawu.
Mawu is not generally identified or represented by a specific form and to some, Mawu is too awesome to even try and fully comprehend. So various deities act as intermediaries through a network of shrines.
Ancestors also play an important role in this cycle with the belief that ancestors continue working for the family after their deaths and so they should be respected.
Eʋe spiritual practitioners currently make up the smallest religious percentage but the presence of traditional and cultural practices are still a very real part of the fabric of everyday life.
